AMO 2027 Grades 4-5 SET 22 - Self-study

Question 1

How many triangles are there in the missing image from following pattern?

Count the separate small triangles. Continue the simple rule of successive pictures having rows of 1, then 1+3, then 1+3+5, and then 1+3+5+7 triangles.

Question 2

For every 5 chickens a farmer has, he has 3 goats. Altogether, there are 132 legs. How many total chickens and goats are there?

Count two legs per chicken and four per goat.

Question 3

If $a\mathbin{\%}b=a+b+a-b$, what is $(9\mathbin{\%}5)\mathbin{\%}17$?

The percent-shaped symbol is defined only by the displayed rule in this question.
  1. 32
  2. 34
  3. 36
  4. 38
  5. 40

Question 4

All of Marcy’s marbles are blue, red, green, or yellow. One third of her marbles are blue, one fourth of them are red, and six of them are green. What is the smallest number of yellow marbles?

Marble counts are whole numbers and no colour count may be negative.

Question 5

Susan jogged from home to the sport complex at a constant speed of 6 km/h. 10 minutes later, her sister, Susie, started riding a bicycle along the same route towards the sports complex at a constant speed of 18 km/h. If they arrived at sports complex at the same time, how many seconds does it take Susan to jog from home to the sport complex?

Question 6

A cistern can be filled in 9 hours. But it takes 10 hours, due to a leak in its lower part. If the cistern is full, then how many hours does it take to empty the cistern?

Use constant inlet and leak rates. During emptying, close the inlet and let only the leak drain the full tank completely.

Question 7

The following bar graph shows the favourite fruit of a class of 50 students (each student chooses exactly one fruit). The tic marks on the vertical axis are equally spaced. How many students whose favourite fruit is banana are there?

Read bar heights from the common zero baseline; each equal tick interval represents the same number of students.

Question 8

The following table shows the scores of Tiffany, Ursula, Vincent and Warren in the “Mathcraft Game”. Who received the highest score?

| Player | Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 | Round 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiffany | 7 | 56 | 8 | 43 |
| Ursula | 37 | 24 | 36 | 13 |
| Vincent | 27 | 41 | 23 | 21 |
| Warren | 27 | 38 | 23 | 27 |

Compare each player’s total over all four rounds.
  1. Tiffany
  2. Ursula
  3. Vincent
  4. Warren
  5. Tiffany and Vincent

Question 9

In the following multiplication, A and B stand for different digits. Find A and B.

$$\overline{AB}\times\overline{BA}=3154.$$

The partial products are 114 and 304; 304 is shifted one place to the left.

Digit strings are two-digit base-ten numbers, not products; leading digits are nonzero. Use both displayed partial products, not only the final product.

Question illustration

Answer entry: Enter the two digits in the order A;B, separated by one semicolon, without spaces.

Question 10

Observe the pattern. What should be the value of A?

| Position | 1 | 2 | 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | 1 | 3 | 2 |
| Middle | 6 | 20 | 12 |
| Bottom | 2 | 7 | A |

For this practice question, use the simple intended rule: the middle entry is twice the sum of the top and bottom entries.

  1. 4
  2. 6
  3. 8
  4. Impossible to know
  5. None of the above

Question 11

Three Fridays of a month have the dates which are even numbers. Which day of the week is the 14th of this month?

Use a usual calendar month of 28, 29, 30 or 31 days.
  1. Monday
  2. Tuesday
  3. Wednesday
  4. Thursday
  5. None of the above

Question 12

The sum of ages of three members of Diane’s family was 47 in the year 2015. They had a new born baby 2 years ago. What is the sum of the ages of all four members of the family now?

The source leaves the year of “now” unspecified. For grading, compare ages at corresponding annual dates: an unknown whole number t of years has elapsed since the 2015 reference date, each original member has aged by t years, and the baby is exactly 2 years old. Do not assume “now” is 2027. Choose among the original options under this convention.
  1. 56
  2. 57
  3. 59
  4. 60
  5. None of the above

Question 13

Mary has several boxes. Each box has the same number of coins. If she has a total of 24 coins in 6 boxes, how many coins are there in her 12 boxes altogether?
  1. 36
  2. 32
  3. 24
  4. 22
  5. None of the above

Question 14

Find the missing numbers.

Use the source’s simple rule: each outside number is the sum of the two inner sectors adjoining the ray directly opposite it through the center.
