AMO 2027 Grades 4-5 SET 21 - Self-study

Question 1

1/3 of the students in a hall were boys. When 35 boys left the auditorium, the number of boys decreased to 1/4 of the total number of pupils in the hall. How many girls were in the hall?

Only the stated 35 boys leave; the number of girls is unchanged.

Question 2

Shauna takes five tests, each worth a maximum of 100 points. Her scores on the first three tests are 76, 94, and 87. In order to average 81 for all five tests, what is the lowest score she could earn on one of the other two tests?

Question 3

If A is multiplied by 100, it becomes C. If A + B is multiplied by 1000, it becomes D. If B is 10/100 of A, what is the value of C/D?

Assume A is nonzero, so the requested quotient is defined.
  1. 11
  2. $10/9$
  3. $100/11$
  4. $110/9$
  5. None of the above

Question 4

In a chess tournament, each player has to play one game with every other player. Six players, Albert, Ben, Charles, Dennis, Ethan and Francis, took part in the tournament. So far, Albert has played 5 games, Ben has played 4 games, Charles has played 3 games, Dennis has played 2 games and Ethan has played 1 game. How many games has Francis played?

Question 5

In the algorithm below, the letters a, b and c represent different digits from 0 to 9. What is the three-digit number $\overline{abc}$?

$$a+\overline{ab}+\overline{ab}+\overline{abc}+1000=2018.$$

A digit string denotes a base-ten number, not a product; its leading digit is nonzero.

Question 6

A teacher wants to equally distribute 67 pieces of candy to 9 students. How many pieces of candy will be left after all students receive the largest possible pieces of candy from their teacher?

Distribute whole candies without cutting them.
  1. 3
  2. 4
  3. 5
  4. 6
  5. None of the above

Question 7

In a four-day period Monday through Thursday each of the following temporary office workers worked only one day, each a different day. Ms. Johnson was scheduled to work on Monday, but she traded with Mr. Carter, who was originally scheduled to work on Wednesday. Ms. Falk traded with Mr. Kirk, who was originally scheduled to work on Thursday. After all the switching was done, who worked on Tuesday? In your answer sheet, write 001 for Ms. Johnson, 002 for Mr. Carter, 003 for Ms. Falk, 004 for Mr. Kirk.

Answer entry: Enter exactly the three-digit code from the question, including leading zeros.

Question 8

In a test there are 100 questions. A candidate gets 4 marks for each correct answer, and a minus of 1 for each wrong answer. If the candidate scores 350 marks, how many correct answers did he have?

Assume every one of the 100 questions is answered and is either correct or wrong; there are no blank responses.

Question 9

45% of Jenny’s mass of rice is equal to 50% of Charlie’s mass of rice. Jenny's is 102 g heavier than Charlie’s. Find their total mass of rice.

Question 10

A ”stair-step” figure is made of alternating black and white squares in each row. Rows 1 through 4 are shown. All rows begin and end with a white square. How many black squares are there in the 37th row?

Continue the simple staircase rule: each new row has one more black and one more white square than the previous row.

Question 11

The bar graph below shows the number of beads each student has.

a) Who has twice as many beads as Winnie?

b) What is the total number of beads the students have?

c) What is the total number of beads Shawn and Ted have?

The graph axis misprints beads as “breads”; read the quantity as beads.

Question illustration

Answer entry: Enter (a);(b);(c): the name followed by the two integer bead counts, separated by semicolons, without spaces or units.

Question 12

a) A boat goes 40 km upstream in 8 hours and a distance of 49 km downstream in 7 hours. Find the speed of the boat in still water.

b) If Nannie can swim downstream at 6 km/h and upstream at 2 km/h. What is his speed in still water?

For each part assume constant still-water speed and a steady current of the same magnitude in both directions.

Answer entry: Enter the integer speeds in km/h for (a);(b), separated by one semicolon, without spaces or units.

Question 13

Find the missing numbers.

a) Find A and C.

b) Find A and B.

| Part / grid | Top row | Bottom row |
|---|---|---|
| a1 | 3, 9 | 11, 6 |
| a2 | 7, 21 | 14, 9 |
| a3 | 5, 15 | 16, 11 |
| a4 | 4, A | 20, C |
| b1 | 3, 7 | 4, 5 |
| b2 | 5, 7 | 2, 3 |
| b3 | 9, 17 | 8, 55 |
| b4 | 6, A | 7, B |

Use the source rules: in (a), multiply the top-left entry by 3 to get the top-right, and subtract 5 from the bottom-left to get the bottom-right; in (b), the top-right is the sum of the left entries and the bottom-right is their product minus that sum. A in the two parts is independent.

Question illustration

Answer entry: Enter the four integers in the order (a) A;(a) C;(b) A;(b) B, separated by semicolons, without spaces.

Question 14

Find the perimeter and area of the shape:

All boundary segments shown are horizontal or vertical.

Question illustration

Answer entry: Enter perimeter in cm, then area in square cm, as two integers separated by one semicolon, without spaces or units.

Question 15

Given $2\oplus3=3+4+5$ and $5\oplus4=4+5+6+7+8+9$. Find $7\oplus5$.

Use the simple intended rule: a ⊕ b is the sum of consecutive integers from b through b + a, including both endpoints.
