Question 1

Some numbers are arranged in a certain pattern as shown below.

What is the sum of the row of five numbers where the number 50 appears?

| Row | A | B | C | D | E |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
| 2 | 20 | 18 | 16 | 14 | 12 |
| 3 | 22 | 24 | … | … | … |
| … | … | … | … | … | … |

Continue the simple rule: consecutive positive even numbers, five entries per row, alternating left-to-right and right-to-left.

Question 2

Calculate the following:

$$T=(7+11+15+\cdots+1831+1835)$$
$$\qquad-(14+18+\cdots+1822+1826).$$

  2. 4137
  3. 4138
  4. 4139
  5. None of the above

Question 3

Farhan and Kenneth shared 240 marbles in the ratio of 4 : 11 respectively. How many marbles must Kenneth give Farhan so that the two boys would have the same number of marbles?
  1. 56
  2. 88
  3. 112
  4. 120
  5. 128

Question 4

Hammie is in the 6th grade and weighs 106 pounds. Her quadruplet sisters are tiny babies and weigh 5, 5, 6, and 8 pounds. Which is greater, the average (mean) weight of these five children or the median weight, and by how many pounds?

Answer entry: Use mean for the mean or median for the median. Enter the code for the greater quantity, then a semicolon and the integer difference in pounds, with no spaces or units.

Question 5

There are 32 pots on all the sides and the corners of a square field. Suppose the pots that are next to each other are all equally spaced. How many pots are placed on each side of the field?

For each side, count the pots at both endpoint corners as well as those between them. Count each physical pot only once in the total of 32.
  1. 6
  2. 7
  3. 8
  4. 9
  5. None of the above

Question 6

Assuming the pattern below continues, how many squares will be in Figure 5?

Count unit squares. Continue by adding one unit square to the end of each of the four arms at every step.

Question 7

The clock chimes once when it is 1 o'clock, chimes twice when it is 2 o'clock, chimes thrice when it is 3 o'clock, and so on. How many times will it chime between 11 a.m and 10 p.m.

Interpret “between” strictly: exclude the chimes at exactly 11 a.m. and exactly 10 p.m. The clock follows the usual 12-hour chime cycle and chimes only on the hour.

Question 8

45 sweets are given to Albert, Ben, Charles and Dennis in this manner. Who will get the last sweet?

| Albert | Ben | Charles | Dennis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
| … | … | … | … |

The table entries are the serial numbers of individual sweets, handed out one at a time in the repeating order Albert, Ben, Charles, Dennis.

Question 9

A page was missing from a 72-page book. When Josh added up the remaining page numbers, the sum was 2521. Which page was missing?

For this practice item, “a page” means one physical leaf with two consecutive numbered sides. The book is numbered 1 through 72. Give both missing page numbers.

Answer entry: Enter the two integer page numbers in increasing order, separated by one semicolon, without spaces.

Question 10

Town A and Town B are 435km apart. At 9:15 a.m., a car left Town A and travel towards Town B at a constant speed of 80km/h. At the same time, a lorry left B and travelled towards Town A at a constant speed. When they met, the car travelled a distance of 240km. Find the speed of the lorry.
